Maastricht is home to a unique football team where the love for the game transcends language\u00a0barriers. Composed primarily of young refugees, this team is supported by Scharn Club\u00a0<\/span>Maastricht, which provides the players with the opportunity to train and compete in the Dutch\u00a0<\/span>Youth League 3. At the heart of this initiative is SIM (Sportieve Integratie Maastricht), an\u00a0<\/span>organization dedicated to integrating under-18 refugees from war-torn regions into local sports\u00a0<\/span>communities, helping them find connection, teamwork, and a sense of belonging through the\u00a0<\/span>power of sport.<\/span><\/p>

The team is coached by Iskandar Deek, affectionately known as Coach Alex. A Lebanese\u00a0<\/span>national with over 15 years of international coaching experience, Coach Alex is also an\u00a0<\/span>experienced physical education teacher. He previously founded and led Cedars Football Club\u00a0<\/span>(CFC) in Lebanon, serving as its managing director for eight years. In addition to his coaching\u00a0<\/span>role, he is an active volunteer with the Refugee Program Maastricht (RPM), where he has\u00a0<\/span>taught newcomers English for over a year.<\/span><\/p>

The team includes two Dutch players, while the rest are refugee minors from conflict zones, all\u00a0seeking asylum in the Netherlands. Arabic and English are the primary spoken languages, yet\u00a0<\/span>Coach Alex notes that on the field, they hardly need words\u2014football itself becomes their shared\u00a0<\/span>language. Through the game, these young players connect across cultural divides and learn\u00a0<\/span>discipline, teamwork, and the power of unity beyond borders.<\/span><\/p>

The boys train together two to three times a week, and their dedication has shown remarkable\u00a0results: they’ve won all six games this season. Despite the team’s constant changes\u2014as some\u00a0<\/span>players receive citizenship and relocate to other cities\u2014they continue to achieve impressive\u00a0<\/span>success, even beating some of the top teams in Maastricht. \u201cWe compete to be champions,\u201d\u00a0<\/span>says Coach Alex, reflecting the team\u2019s spirit and commitment to excellence on and off the field.<\/span><\/p>

This team provides far more than physical exercise; it\u2019s a vital tool for community integration.\u00a0For many of these young players, football offers an outlet for emotions that are often hard to\u00a0<\/span>express. Some struggle in the classroom, but through the sport, they learn to manage their\u00a0<\/span>anger, face life\u2019s challenges, and connect with others in positive ways. Coach Alex instills a\u00a0<\/span>sense of harmony, turning the team into a close-knit family on the field. His work is praised by\u00a0<\/span>the boys’ teachers, who see a steady rise in their self-esteem and confidence, both in school\u00a0<\/span>and in their interactions beyond the classroom.<\/span><\/p>

One of the team\u2019s standout players is 16-year-old Haval, who arrived in Maastricht from Iraq\u00a0nearly two years ago and is still awaiting his residency documents. Haval has always loved\u00a0<\/span>football, but back in Iraq, he had no access to an academy or opportunities to play\u00a0<\/span>professionally. Now, through the Maastricht team, he\u2019s found his passion and a path for personal\u00a0<\/span>growth. Playing alongside his teammates, he says, is shaping his character. His dream is to\u00a0<\/span>continue playing football professionally once his residency is approved, building on the\u00a0<\/span>foundation he\u2019s developed here.<\/span><\/p>

The Dutch players, meanwhile, express their own appreciation for being part of the team, noting\u00a0that it fuels their motivation and drive. While language barriers sometimes make communication\u00a0<\/span>challenging, Coach Alex always finds ways to connect with each player, bridging gaps and\u00a0<\/span>inspiring the team to achieve their goals together. For these local players, the team is an\u00a0<\/span>opportunity to grow alongside peers from diverse backgrounds, learning valuable lessons in\u00a0<\/span>resilience and teamwork.<\/span><\/p>
